Most of the Scribes and Pharises were hypocrites, but many of them, so far as the world was concerned, lived very righteous lives. No doubt many of them kept the law as nearly as they possibly could have kept it, and there was probably no kind of reproach that could have been brought against many of them. In fact, Paul, a Pharisee, said, "touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless."Philippians 3:6 Yet the Lord said that except our righteousness exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees we could not be saved. Then, how can that be? I know there were many Scribes and Pharisees who, so far as strictness and obedience to the things that were right were concerned, lived a more righteous life that I have ever lived. You are probably admiting the same thing, but thank the Lord that we do have a righteousness which far exceeds any righteousness that they could have. They had their own, but we have that of another, that of the Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus was the pure, sinless, spotless Lamb, the Son of the living God, and it is "In him we have redemption." "Not by words of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us"Titus 3:5. "All of our righteousnesses are as filthy rags" in the sight of the Lord, but the righteousness of the Son of God, in the sight of God, is without spot or wrinkle. So God looks at us in Jesus, and surely He, Jesus, is our only peace and only hope.
