There are many "EXCEPTS" recorded in the Holy Scriptures.
This is the third in a series of five.

      EXCEPT THE LORD

"EXCEPT the Lord build the house,
Jesus Saviourthey labour in vain that build it:

EXCEPT the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain."
                              Psalm 127:1
This Scripture, in words and in meaning, is very clear. It just simply says that if the Lord does not do it, the doing of it is all in vain. How true that is. We can prove that from history, from literature and from personal experiences. No nation has ever lasted, because the Lord has never had full sway in the hearts of the people building the nation. Nations, like individuals, have all gone in their own way and not in the Lord's way. Therefore they cannot last or endure. The only kingdom or nation that will live forever is the one that is going to have the government sitting upon the shoulders of the Son of God (Isa. 9:6). The nations that are now in existence, and seemingly thriving, will some day come to naught. Egypt, Babylon, Greece, Rome and others have already seen their downfall, and God is no respecter of nations. Surely America was built according to the will of the Lord more than any other nation, but the Bible says "Except the Lord KEEP the city" - or nation, the watchman waketh but in vain. America is fast fulfilling the prophecy which says, "As it was in the days of Noah." Then, in the days of Noah, God came down with blessings for Noah and his family, but He came down with terrible judgment for the rest of the world. Yes, and some day the Lord is going to come again. He is coming with great blessings to those who know and trust Him. But woe be unto the people and nations who know Him not! It is going to be the most terrible judgment the world has ever known, because we, individuals and nations, have gone in our own way.
That great EXCEPT holds true in the building of churches, homes and lives. Many churches are being built today by men, systems and adding machines, but not by God. God measures the march of a church by the salvation of souls, but many times we measure it by the payments of the debts and the number of the people on the roll.
There is a divorce case today in about every third or fourth home in the United States. That is because God does not build the homes. The homes that last are the homes that are built and kept by the Lord.
"All we like sheep have gone astray, we have turned every one to his own way" (Isa. 53:6). In other words, we have tried to build our own lives according to our own plans and not according to the blueprint of the Lord Jesus Christ. It doesn't matter how successful the life may seem to be, if that life is not built by the Lord, the life is all in vain.
