The emphasis of this verse is not necessarily on the words "be not conformed," but the emphasis should be placed on the words "but be ye transformed." The latter is far more important than the former, because, to a certain extent, the former depends upon the latter. If we have not been transformed it will be difficult to keep from being conformed. The word conform simply means to "fit-in with." It means to follow the crowd and the gang, fitting in with their program. Jelly conforms to a bowl, like some people you have seen who just "sit down all over." The Lord does not want us to fit in or conform to this world. The best way to settle the question of conforming is to first settle the question of being transformed. The Lord "gave Himself for us that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a PECULIAR people," a different people, different from the worldly people. Let us yield to the Lord, renew our minds, thus being transformed, so that we will not be conformed to the world which passeth away. |
