BEFORE Samson had played with sin he was able to kill a thousand men with the jawbone of an ass. Afterwards, the men, the Philistines, were able to take Samson and do with him as they pleased.
Sin never leaves a person better than it finds him. Its characteristics are always the same. It robbed Samson of so much of his power that the people bound him with fetters of brass. Sin is ever binding the hearts and minds of people. The Devil has the world bound to his subtle temptations and awful results. That is the reason that souls cannot refrain from living in sin, they are bound by its cords. The only real freedom from sin, with its power and penalty, is to trust in the Son of God. He can set us free, and if the Son shall make us free, we shall be free indeed.
Sin also robbed Samson of so much of his power that the Philistines took him and put out his eyes. John the Baptist came with a message saying, "Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world." But so often we let the scales of sin remain on our eyes that we cannot behold the Lamb, we cannot "Look and Live," we cannot "taste and see that He is good."
Too, sin robbed Samson of so much of his power that the Philistines made him grind at the mill. Sin has a grinding influence. It makes us stay in the same old rut, and always keeps us mad with ourselves because we are in it. Suicides are the result of the grinding power of sin. In the year 1935 there were twenty-six millionaires who committed suicide.
The Lord Jesus can give us sight, break the bands of sin asunder, and set us free if we will come to Him and trust Him.
