      #12Sin's Penalty

"Then afterward ye shall return,
and be guiltless before the Lord and before Israel;
and this land shall be your possession before the Lord.
But
if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord:
and be sure your sin will find you out.
"
                             Numbers 32:22-23
     The Lord was trying to get the people of Israel to return unto Him, thus finding pardon and forgiveness. He told them that if they would return He would not hold them guilty, but if they would not return they would sin against Him still and their sin was sure to find them out.
   The laws of the land are fairly binding in many respects, but many times these laws can be overlooked or passed over. No doubt many law-breakers will never be punished by the courts of the land. However, that is not true concerning the laws of the Lord, and concerning the punishment for sin. God has only one way of dealing with sin and that is to put it away from Him, to judge it, and to condemn the sinner. It was His great mercy toward us that caused Him to permit His own Son to die in our stead, to take the condemnation of sin in His own body on the tree. If we will come to the Lord and trust Him as our Saviour, then there is great mercy and cleansing to be found and had; however, if we fail to come to Jesus we have sinned against the Lord, and "be sure your sin will find you out."
   Sin always brings a curse to everything it touches. It was so powerful that it caused Adam, the best man ever made, to fall and be driven from the garden and separated from God. Sin was so luring that it caused Samson, the strongest man physically, to lose his strength, eyesight and freedom, and then die at his own hand. Sin was so prevalent that it caused Saul, the first king, the man head and shoulders above all the others of his kingdom, to die by his own sword, and say, "Behold, I have played the fool." Certainly if the tallest king, and the strongest man and the best man could not overcome the enemy of sin, there is no use for us to try in our little strength. Therefore, we must "flee to the Rock that is higher than I." We must trust in the One who said, "Get thee behind me Satan," and who came forth victorious over sin, death, hell and the grave. If we will take Him He will pardon and save, but if we fail to come our sin will find us out and we will have to pay with eternal damnation.
