Paul was bound in chains because he had been preaching the Gospel, the word of the Lord that Jesus was raised from the dead. However, Paul cared more for the Gospel message going out than he did for his own comfort. He said that the people could bind him with chains but they could not bind the Word of God. The only way they could keep Paul from preaching the word of the Gospel was to sever his head from his body, and just that they finally did.
Most every Christian martyr has died because he loved the Lord and the Word of the Lord more than he loved himself. Before letting the Word stop, they would be stopped themselves. The world is at enmity against God and also against His Word, but the world has never been able to do away with it. They can't stop it, they can't bind it, they can't kill it, and they can't pass over it. The Word must definitely be accepted or rejected. "Heaven and earth shall pass away but my Word shall not pass away," Jesus said. Again He said, "Verily, verily I say unto you, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law till all be fulfilled." "Forever, O Lord, Thy Word is settled in Heaven," and it is still a lamp unto our feet, and a light unto our pathway.
The people could bind Paul, put him in prison and cut his head off, but Paul still gloried in the fact that the Word of the Lord was not bound.
