JOHN looked upon Jesus and said, "Behold the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world." The Lord Jesus Christ is the only One in all the world Who could possibly take away sins. "For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins." (Hebrews 10:4) The priests stood daily in the temple offering sacrifices for the people, but every one of those sacrifices were typical and were pointing forward to the time when the Great Sacrifice was to be offered, that sacrifice being the Lord Jesus Christ. God was not only accepting a sacrifice, but He was also making the sacrifice. He gave "himself for us that he might redeem us."
When Jesus, on the cross, said, "It is finished," then the one and final sacrifice for sin had been completely made. Now, Jesus does not have to stand, as did the priests, continually offering sacrifices, but He is seated at the right hand of God. "For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself... so Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many." (Hebrews 9:24-28)
All the other priests, before Jesus came and died, stood daily offering the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: but Jesus, the Great High Priest, offered one sacrifice, Himself, for sin forever and sat down. " 'Tis done, the great transaction's done."
