THAT is such a wonderful contrast.
Peter, in prison, seemingly had no way of escape, but the church was in prayer. And you know, when Peter is in prison and the church is in prayer, something just simply has to happen to either Peter or the church.
Let us notice how the church prayed. The Bible says, "Prayer (which God has promised to answer) was made without ceasing (continuously, which God has promised to bless) of the church (united effort, Christian people, "Two or three gathered together in my name") unto God (the only One who is able to answer and do the miraculous) for him (their prayer was very definite: they were praying that Peter might be released or set free). Herod and his four quaternions of soldiers could not keep Peter in prison because God was answering prayer, and there is nothing that is too hard for the Lord. Herod was fighting against God, but "if God be for us, who can (afford or dare to) be against us." "Nay, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him that loved us."
Prayer is about the most precious thing in the world, and about the least used thing in the world. If we would only do more praying, God would do more of the things that are seemingly impossible. The fact that "we can't" ought to drive us to Him "Who Can." Many times we cannot do it, whatever it is, but there is no time that we cannot pray to Him, Who can do it. Someone has said: "I have been in places where I couldn't see my way out; I have been in places where I couldn't feel my way out; but, thank God, I have never been in a place where I couldn't pray my way out." The devil himself cannot place a top over our head. He does not know how to put on the roofing. There is always a light to be seen if we will only look upward. When we look within us and around us we see nothing but failures, but when we look up we see Him who cannot fail, for Jesus never fails.
Peter in prison, plus the church in prayer, equals Peter's release from prison. Yes, and sinners in darkness, plus Christians in prayer, equals souls being released from the bondage of sin. "Lord, teach us to pray."
Lord, teach us to pray,
Pray To him who prevails
Pray God's power never fails,
So, Lord, teach us to pray.
