THE first part of that verse condemns every soul that has ever been born, for "all have sinned and come short of the glory of God." And since all have sinned, and since the wages of sin is death, therefore, as far as that part of the verse is concerned, every person must be separated from God for all eternity. But the verse did not stop there. It goes on to say that the Gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The first part brings condemnation, the latter part comfort; the first part no hope, but the second part nothing but hope; the first part no way of escape, but the second part the only way of escape, a way that is both sure and steadfast. Sin pays in wages, its wages being death, but God gives eternal life to all those who trust in His Son, Jesus Christ. If you have not had the experience of the latter part of the verse you must take the consequences of the first part of the verse. The latter part of the verse is entirely a voluntary proposition, but if chosen negatively, the first part is then compulsory. Realizing the terribleness of the results of the first, we should hasten to accept the results of the second.
On which side of the word "but" are you dwelling? It pays to be on the farther side, the eternal life side. The wages of sin is death, but the Gift of God is life.
